Zooms, pans, tilts, and most other motion camera techniques can be applied with standard stop motion approaches. The most common technique is to capture multiple second exposures of light moving from one point to another in the frame. As the sequence is built the beginning and ending points of the lights motion can be moved along a given path. When the pictures are put in sequence the light seems to move with classic stop motion jitter.
Blinkbox

Checked out Blinkbox after reading an article praising its business model. "Watch classic movies online, remix scenes and share with your friends." It didn't really live up to the hype.

For starters, the videos didn't play at all on my default browser (Firefox 2). This may be something to do with the Microsoft framework the site is built with but pretty clueless for a start-up to not support the reigning open source browser.

Secondly, the touted remix capability is simply the ability to add a text message to a pre-edited clip.

On the positive side, if you can view the video, the UI is nice and clean and its fun to be able to browse key scenes of classic movies.

However, it remains to be seen if blinkbox can convert this into anything that retains eyeballs. I should be the target audience (certainly all the films on the homepage were ones I knew well and would happily revisit/remix. But the proposition is pretty thin at present. Yet another site touting 'interactive' 'web...

Animato scales up big remix with the help of Amazon

Why bother getting an A/V artist to remix your stuff if there's a site that can the work for you automatically?

That's the premise of so-hot-right-now start-up Animato. Select your images and music and let the 'patent pending Cinematic Artificial Intelligence technology' create a MTV-style video for you. Sony and others have been distributing automatic presentation software along with their hardware for years (think instant slideshow) and more recently, companies like Slide have capitalised on this market, supplying a range of widgets for your social networking site de jour, but auto-video creation remains in its infancy.

Animoto has been generating considerable buzz in tech circles for its cloud computing backend, which led to a recent cash injection from Amazon, but it remains to be seen whether the aesthetic provided by their system can keep pace with oh-so-fickle audiences and their taste in visual effects. Nothing dates a video more than 'the effects'...

What's certain is...

Open Cut 1.0 - Suzannah

Shot on the RED 1 camera so nice quality material. Go fer it...

http://www.opencut.org/

"OpenCut is a completely open-source film competition designed to encourage people to take professionally shot material and edit it in their own way. As there is no "one way" to tell a story, so too can stories benefit from being re-edited and re-told from many different vantage points and perspectives.

The winner of OpenCut 1.0 will receive a brand new AJA IO HD from Silverado. They will also be recognized as the "editor-of-record" at IMDB and will have their cut submitted to multiple film festivals."

Entry costs US$25

The Slip and remix.nin.com

NIN go one step further in their pursuit of a two-way relationship with fans. Re-mixable multi-tracks and releases are nothing new for these guys if you've been following their exploits the last couple of years. What is fairly new though is the polished remix site giving fans access to Logic, Ableton and WAV multitrack originals and remixes.

http://remix.nin.com/

Oh yes, and their new album The Slip is entirely CC-licensed. While not as immediately satisfying as some of their older work, their trademark murky groove starts to grow on you by the end. The stand-out tracks for me were the last two - The Four Of Us Are Dying and Demon Seed. Some will question whether NIN have used this CC release as an excuse to put out substandard material but I'm not complaining. The experiment continues...

Those of you working with HD have probably read all the announcements about the studios jumping ship but what could be more interesting news is that the HD DVD authoring geeks are moving into the BD-J developer communities.

What's BD-J? A Java development environment for Blu-Ray which means that you can create far more sophisticated games and interactivity for a Blu-Ray film title. Not to say that all (or even most) of the kinks have been ironed out yet. A few weeks ago, the 'scandal' of non-compliant Blu-Ray players emerged (if you bought early, you lose) and getting the BD-J interactivity to work on the earliest Blu-Ray titles (like Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl) was a matter of potluck.

But I feel a lot more comfortable now making the prediction that BD-J powered entertainment is going to explode in the next couple of years.
AV Jam

AV-Jam is an application that generates music and video that you can control while it plays.

It is collaborative interactive artwork, enabling its subjects to jointly control the music and video using a network of control surfaces connected to a computer. Clever algorithmic processes generate music and video that shape the result by adjusting parameters on the AV-Jam interface. The user is able to jam just like a musician, but without the need for complex instrumental skills. It is particularly aimed at providing access to novice users. Though the AV-Jam system was designed to promote meaningful engagement with media art for people of all ages, it is specifically designed to encourage collaboration between children by facilitating the creation of media rich experiences that might otherwise require more advanced skills of a DV and VJ.

Happy New Open Year!

"Rejoice: the embrace of “openness” by firms that have grown fat on closed, proprietary technology is something we’ll see more of in 2008."

So says The Economist....

The Afterlife is expensive for movies

This article in the NY times discusses the vastly increasing costs of storing digital film assets over the old process - chuck your film negatives, annotated scripts, photographs in a cold storage vault. The point being of course that no-one wants to throw away material and the volumes being produced through digital processes are increasing rapidly.

All the more material for re-mixing and re-versioning. Who knows, perhaps Hollywood will eventually twig to the idea of letting the fans help with the archiving.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/23/business/media/23steal.html?_r=1&ex=1356066000&en=0992396878a47c49&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&oref=slogin

The Moving Images of Tracey Moffatt

Tracey Moffatt is one of Australia's most successful modern artists. Her 2003 exhibition of photography and films, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney, set so-far-unbeaten attendance records. Although primarily known for work she shot herself, for several years Moffatt and her editor collaborator, Garry Hillberg, have been making video collages using Hollywood movies.

Yesterday saw the launch of a book The Moving Images of Tracey Moffatt. I went along to hear her thoughts on what she calls montage, and what we here would describe as mash-ups.

Moffatt has made several montages, starting with Lip (2000) which edits scenes of servants 'talking back' to their masters. The most recent one is Doomed (2007) which re-edits disaster movies. My favourite one is Love (2003) which edits together romance from 153 films in 21 minutes.

The samples are (deliberately) low-fi with multi-generational VHS copies acting as the source for much of the work. This is not just an aesthetic ch...

T_Visionarium - interactive 3D cinema

Ever thought that the millions of images broadcast on television could one day be an archive of human behaviour? Explore that idea as you step into the multi-sensory excitement of interactive 3D cinema.

T_Visionarium's constellation of video-streams responds to your whim, spinning a fascinating narrative web made up of over 20,000 clips from Australian television broadcasts.

A kind of visual search-engine using the latest advances in multi-media database technologies and high-volume video-streaming, T_Visionarium assembles clusters of information according to the pathways you choose to explore.

Be amazed by the sheer volume of audio-visual information you can commandeer as you are literally surrounded by hundreds of clips moving in three dimensions over a curved screen 30 metres long and three and a half metres high.

Developed at the UNSW Centre for Interactive Cinema Research, T_Visionarium opens the door to a whole new future of viewer-image interaction. Experience it to ...

Blade Runner - The Final Cut

Yet another Director's Cut is on its way, from the man who invented them. Disclaimer - I haven't seen this but I'm reviewing the film less than the concept of ongoing re-releases.

The SFFMedia blog is debating whether or not this is a cynical or artist move but for my part, why not? Clearly there is an audience for Ridley Scott's movies and why shouldn't the artist himself keep tweaking if there's a market out there. I remember seeing the Director's Cut in 92 and thinking how contemporary it looked. It sounds as if this new reversioning will introduce the story to a whole new audience, perhaps with unnecessary violence and gore (why does Deckard only kill women?) but I'm looking forward to seeing that opening sequence yet again.

Book a free place online at www.insighteducation.org.uk/Education.htm.

Interactivity is a buzzword across all visual media at the moment with new technologies providing opportunities to involve audiences in the creation and production of multi-platform narratives that enter their lives as never before. So, what does interactivity mean and is increased interactivity entirely desirable? How can you use these new tools to your advantage and the advantage of your work?

This special industry panel event will include makers, theorists and exhibitors of work in film and video, computer games, theatre and television that has an 'interactive' edge or agenda so that we can explore what the term means for different media and whether it is a new phenomenon or an age-old phenomenon in different guises. We will explore whether 'increased' interactivity is an advance over more 'passive' audience involvement and to what extent the traditional boundaries between cinema, computer games, theatre an...

Google's Open Social API

The launch of Google's OpenSocial API may prove to be a milestone in the development of the Web. With the notable exception of Facebook, social networks are lining up to express their support for an "open" (will reserve judgment on this) mechanism for linking communities together.

Myspace has just announced that they are going to adopt this which begs the question - what about the rest of the networks out there? Facebook? The Yahoo family of companies, like Flickr, Jumpcut? Multiply? Certainly this sounds like a golden opportunity for film-makers to link up their audiences and spread them remixable bits around.

http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/

http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2007/11/myspace-joins-googles-opensocial.html
